Recently the Coalition to Abolish Spring Hunting (CASH) initiated a petition to call for the abolition of this practice. Only Maltese registered voters are eligible and a total of 34,000 signatures were required for the government to run a referendum.

It could not be signed online, paper copies were printed and to date 44,000 Maltese people have added their names. Thus if democracy prevails the people of Malta will have the right to vote on this issue. The vast majority of the Maltese find spring hunting unacceptable and believe the birds should enjoy safe passage over the islands. They also resent their countryside being ‘off limits’ during the beautiful spring because of the dangers presented by the hunters and they are disgruntled with the ‘secret deals’ the hunting lobby has made with successive governments as they see this as an affront to modern democracy.

If and when the referendum runs a significant turn-out will be required to win the necessary support. To this end Birdlife Malta are running an appeal to raise 50K Euros. This will allow them to campaign and lobby the people to ensure they participate in the vote.

You can make a contribution here, and every little helps so please give whatever you can afford. Your birds need you.
