Steppes Travel have created another exclusive cruise with Chris, covering one thousand nautical miles in the Kimberley, North West Australia. This once in a lifetime wildlife adventure is timed to coincide with the end of the wet season.
At this time of year the waterfalls will be in full flow, thundering off the edge of the sandstone cliffs and the electrical storms can be powerful and dramatic, providing some spectacular light shows.
- Travel with Chris aboard the luxury expedition small ship, True North, in the Kimberley.
- Take a helicopter journey to the top of King George Falls for a picnic lunch.
- Learn about the ‘Bradshaws’ ancient rock art, possibly the oldest paintings known to man.
- View the iconic sites of King George Falls, the Hunter River, The Prince Regent River, Montgomery Reef and the Horizontal Waterfalls.
- Local birding expert George Swann joins Chris for dedicated birding excursions to the best known spots.

The cruise takes in some of the most iconic sites of the area and some of the most magnificent wildlife to be found in the world. It includes a helicopter flight, excursions ashore to discover local flora and fauna, viewing of historical ancient rock art, swimming under waterfalls, stunning opportunities for photography, birding excursions, sumptuous food and drink aboard the True North. You’ll have an opportunity to listen to talks from Chris.
Helicopter Excursion and Kimberley Rock Art
A helicopter flight takes you to Eagle Falls on the Drysdale River, which is only accessible by helicopter. Here there will be guided walks through the untouched landscape in search of Kimberley’s ancient rock art and the chance to swim in and around the waterfalls.
Birding Excursions, fishing and crocodiles
The Kimberley is home to over 300 species of birds, from endemics to migrants, pelagic birds and waders, colourful parrots and cockatoos to herons, egrets, ibises, bitterns, geese and ducks. Chris and local birding expert George Swann will lead dedicated birding excursions to spot some of these fascinating birds.
Crocodiles are also permanent companions here and there will be great opportunities to photograph this incredible and famous Australian resident both in and out of the water.
At the end of a busy day exploring return to your luxury accommodation on the True North for a drink in the bar with Chris, George and the North Star team, who will be pleased to share their knowledge and expertise of the area. Chris will be giving talks on board and will also be available to assist with photographic tips.
