Diary - Spring 2009 . . . continued (2)

The Gambia is great. I went back for a weeks birding in February and to meet up with all my old mates. The remarkable Malik Suso was our local guide as usual and we notched up a fair smattering of sexy birds. In between I found some time to return to my ‘Crab Project’, and therefore spent my scant spare time lying flat in manky mangrove mud in the baking sun.

When I got back I was told that I had got the ‘Springwatch’ gig. My thoughts and reaction are readable on other pages of this site and have by now been widely reported elsewhere. In short; great, a challenge of course, just up my street in terms of format and objective, and really looking forward to it. Let's just see what happens, Bill will be a tough act to follow, and God help Kate! I also presented a programme for BBC South West entitled ‘In Search of the Rural Idyll’ which I greatly enjoyed making and which was broadcast on Easter Monday. I missed it as I was back in France enjoying some balmy days and the company of my Kestrels and Black Restarts whilst typing loads of stuff day in, day out. The Itch and Scratch Gang were on hand to shatter any tranquillity and to even occasionally bark over the Nightingales. As usual they did a fine job of collecting a legion of giant ticks which soon found their way onto me, which was nice.

Still at least I managed to see a few games including the awesome Liverpool/Chelsea Champions League quarter finals. Sadly later a rematch final was denied by levels of refereeing lunacy new to sport – can anyone tell me quite why, despite its use in cricket, rugby and tennis, video-refereeing is still a soccer taboo? And sympathies to United’s Fletcher too, who will miss his big day because someone else messed up theirs. And when I start feeling soft about anything to do with Manchester United it is clearly time to give up and go and do something else . . .
